Judge Lewis was appointed to the Court of Civil Appeals in 2024 by Governor Kay Ivey. Prior to taking the appellate bench Judge Lewis was Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, where he served as a Circuit Judge since 2016. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Lewis was the senior partner of the Lewis Offices of Bill Lewis, a firm he started in 2006. Judge Lewis served as Assistant District Attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit before going into private practice, making him one of the few Judges in the State of Alabama that has served as a prosecutor and defense attorney in criminal cases and also practiced civil and family law.
Judge Lewis has been certified to practice law in Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida, and over his legal career has tried thousands of cases in Federal and State courts. His diverse legal background an experience as a trial judge is an asset to the Court of Civil Appeals.
Judge Lewis received his undergraduate degrees in political science and economics from the University of the South. He received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law.
As a Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, Judge Lewis served on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Circuit Judges Association. He also served as President of the Elmore County Bar Association, Chairman of the Elmore County Republican Executive Committee, Alabama Republican Executive Committee, Federalist Society, a member of the Federal Criminal Justice Act Panel, and on the Boards of Directors of the River Region United Way, the Elmore County Community Foundation, and the Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce, and Joe Sewell Award. He is also a graduate of Leadership, Elmore County, as well as many other community and charitable organizations.
