Ronald Reagan- 1981 Inaugural Address
Justice Bill Lewis was appointed to the Alabama Supreme Court in 2025 by Governor Kay Ivey, following his service on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Before joining the appellate bench, he served as Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, where he had been a Circuit Judge since 2016.
As a practicing attorney across three states in both federal and state courts, I saw that the justice system could vary depending on who you were, where you were, and who you knew. As Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, I was committed to creating a court environment where the rule of law governs, everyone is treated fairly, and sentences are just—keeping our communities and circuit safe. As a Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court, I will continue to ensure that our courts are fair and just, while representing the interests of all Alabamians. I work for you!
My approach as a judge is to interpret the law as it’s written, following the Constitution and statutes closely. I value judicial restraint, respect the separation of powers, and strive to uphold the principles and values that have long guided our courts.
Elected judges play a crucial role in serving and protecting the community because they hold the power to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law. By administering impartial and equitable decisions, elected judges ensure that all individuals receive equal treatment under the law, thereby promoting trust and confidence in the legal system.
