Justice Lewis was appointed to the Alabama Supreme Court in 2025 by Governor Kay Ivey. Before becoming a Supreme Court Justice, Lewis was a Judge on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Prior to taking the appellate bench, Justice Lewis was Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, where he served as a Circuit Judge since 2016. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Lewis was the senior partner of the Lewis Law Firm, a firm he started in 2006. Judge Lewis served as Assistant District Attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit before going into private practice, making him one of the few Judges in the State of Alabama that has served as a prosecutor and defense attorney in criminal cases and also practiced civil and family law.
Justice Lewis is licensed to practice law in Alabama and Tennessee, and Florida through court admission. Over his career, he has tried thousands of cases in both state and federal courts, and his broad legal experience, together with his service as a trial judge and intermediate appellate judge, brings a valuable perspective to the Alabama Supreme Court.
Judge Lewis received his undergraduate degrees in political science and economics from the University of the South. He received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law.
As a Presiding Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit, Judge Lewis served on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Circuit Judges Association. He has held numerous leadership roles in the legal profession and in community service, serving with professional associations, charitable foundations, and civic organizations. His record of involvement reflects a commitment to strengthening both the justice system and the communities it serves.
